Third Place in the Antiques Roadshow Top Ten Items
"A True Antiques Roadshow Treasure" Found Near Charleston, SC
This past weekend, Palmetto Estate Liquidators (www.Palmetto-Estate-Liquidators.com) conducted a massive living estate sale in Moncks Corner, SC. The owners of the property due to ill health moved to assisted living and sold their seventy plus years of antiques and collectibles.
There were many fine and old pieces discovered under the surface including old Coca Cola stationary bottle openers in their original 1950's boxes, old baby clothes dating to the early 1930's, antique lead crystal and cut pieces and bottles that were in the family since the late 1800's and so much more.
However the true star of the "treasure hunt" was found in the rafters of a shed in the backyard of the property. It is a hand-hewn and handmade oak rocking chair from the middle of the 1800's. This chair belonged to the owner's great grandmother.
The beauty of this chair is the beautifully articulated Gothic spire-topped side upright posts and the meticulously hand beveled ladder back horizontal slats. The chair's wood shows over a century and a half of patination and oxidation and the handmade chisel marks are evident throughout the piece. The seat, which may have been replaced around the turn of the century (1900's) is wound rush roping in a large scale basket weave pattern.
The other true feature of the chair is that the bottom rockers are different lengths and through further investigation this was design decision and not a flaw. I have been told by a couple of local antique dealers that the different lengths of the front and back rocker were to compensate for a person who was missing a leg or foot. The longer rocker which is the right facing rocker would have been for a person who had lost their left foot or leg. The design was to accommodate rocking with only one foot and the person would feel secure of not tipping backwards.
There is no family history of someone who had lost a leg or foot, but it is felt it may have been made or changed as a result of an injury that occurred during the Civil War, however this is pure speculation.
All in all, this piece is not only a beautiful example of 19th century handmade furniture, but the quality, care and provenance of the piece speaks to the "times in which it was created".
This piece has no precedent by which to evaluate it but it is estimated to be worth between $4,500. and $15,000. to the right collector or historic preservation group. The proceeds of the sale of this chair will be used to assist the owners with their living and on-going health costs.
This incredible piece will be featured at a combined estate/tag sale organized by Palmetto Estate Liquidators to be held July 7th, 8th and 9th in the Lakeview Terrace area of Crowfield Plantations in Goose Creek, SC.
