And I assume that by "(a + b) vertical to (a - 2b)" you mean
(a + b) is perpendicular to (a - 2b).

The dot product of perpendicular vectors is zero. Therefore:
(a + b) • (a - 2b) = 0
a•a - 2a•b + b•a - 2b•b = 0
|| a ||² - a•b - 2|| b ||² = 0
1 - a•b - 2*1 = 0
-1 - a•b = 0
a•b = -1
cosθ = (a • b) / (|| a || || b ||) = -1 / (1*1) = -1
θ = arcos(-1) = π
