Cartilage piercing may be infected? Please help?
I got my cartilage piercing in August 2009 and when I started I took excellent care of it. I cleaned it with the solution everyday, and plus I was at the beach so I was constantly in the salt water which is good for it. Then when soccer started, I had to take the earring out as a safety precaution, but the hole developed a bump around it, which is exactly what I was trying to avoid. Since then I do not wear the earring regularly but whenever I do put it in, it hurts and a mixture of either clear liquid or blood comes out. I try to keep cleaning the piercing to make sure it's not getting infected, but it doesn't seem to be working. What should I do?
The professional who did it said that the ocean was a good way to clean it.
Answer:
The last thing you should do is take out the earring, and you have already done a couple of things wrong during the healing period.
First, salt water from the ocean is *not* good for the piercing at all. The ocean is a dirty body of water. Birds poop in it, people pee in it. That isn't good for a healing piercing.
Second, jewelry should never be removed during the healing period, which is 4-6 months for cartilage. If you had to do this during your soccer practice, then that definitely messed with the tissue.
The "bump" is most likely a keloid, which is a build up of scar tissue. The proper way to heal the piercing is with a saline solution. To do this mix 4 teaspoons of *non iodized* sea salt with one gallon of *distilled* water. Twice a day (morning and night) using *disposable* cups, pour some of the solution to the top of the cup and warm it in the microwave for about ten seconds. Then, submerge your entire ear into the cup for 5-10 minutes. You can find these directions on Safepiercing.org
Lastly, NEVER ever ever use hydrogen peroxide or alcohol on a healing piercing. It will make everything worse.
