Silver Rings Do Promises Make
Many and varied reasons exist for giving someone a gold or silver ring, most familiar among them being engagement and marriage, or as a birthday gift. But did you know that silver rings have also been given to seal a promise? Known as promise rings, silver rings have been given as emblems of a romantic or Platonic promise for centuries. During early Christendom, for example, bishops wore gold or silver rings as an emblem of their spiritual union with the church. Also during the Middle Ages, the powerful men of Venice, Italy – which then claimed maritime supremacy – expressed the mutual "promise" between their city and the Adriatic Sea by tossing a ring into its waters every year on the Day of Ascension.
Here are some examples of the silver rings given today to represent a promise – and the promises that they're given to represent.
Silver rings to symbolize a promise of future engagement: If you've found the one you want to marry but don't feel quite ready, are still a bit young, or have other things to accomplish before settling down, you might wish to seal your promise with a "pre-engagement" ring – a silver ring reflecting the commitment you've made to become engaged at a later date. Some feel this ring should be worn on the right ring finger, so that it not be confused with an engagement ring.
Silver rings to symbolize a promise of chastity or abstinence: As the movement toward abstinence from sexual relations before marriage grows, silver rings symbolizing a commitment to chastity are becoming more popular. Also known as purity rings, these silver rings may be given by a parent to a child, invoking the child's promise to abstain from sex before marriage. They may also be exchanged between a young man and woman who intend to marry, but who have made a commitment to each other to save their first sexual experience – with each other, or at all – for their wedding night.
These silver rings serve as a constant reminder that true love needn't (immediately) be given physical expression. Purity rings may contain a pearl, traditional symbol of purity and innocence. They are usually worn on the left ring finger, with the intention that they ultimately be replaced by a wedding band. Similarly, silver rings are now also being worn as a symbol of an individual's promise to abstain from substance abuse.
Silver rings to symbolize a promise of monogamy: Increasingly, not all committed couples marry. If they nevertheless wish to display their commitment to one another, they may choose to give each other silver rings as a symbol of their monogamy. These silver rings may be adorned with an opal, traditional symbol of fidelity. Silver rings professing a promise of unity and commitment may be worn on the left or right ring finger.
Silver rings to symbolize a promise of friendship: Silver rings make an especially good gift to a friend who is moving far away – as a reminder that true friendship is not affected by geographic distance (especially in the Internet age!). Silver rings given in friendship should be worn on any finger except the left ring finger, to identify them as symbols of Platonic love.
When giving a silver ring to cement a promise, you may wish to have it engraved with a word or phrase evoking the promise. It is crucial to ensure that all parties to the promise understand clearly what they have promised – especially if the silver ring contains a precious gemstone. Lest hearts get broken, a silver ring given in Platonic friendship should not be mistaken as a token of future romantic involvement. Both men and women can wear silver rings as the emblem of a promise, especially one mutually contracted. Such silver rings make a particularly meaningful and enduring piece of jewellery.

I have a silver ring with 9K engraved on the inside. How much would it be worth?
I have a silver ring with 14 very small diamonds on it and on the inside of the ring it says 9K. I'm not sure if its worth anything but if it is, about how much would I get for it?
Answer:
9K gold is .375 pure, alloyed with silver. The value of the gold will depend entirely on the weight of the ring, minus the diamond weight, in troy ounces. If you wanted to sell it for scrap price, the jeweller or dealer would estimate the weight of the diamonds (and offer you little to nothing for them) and subtract that.
Let's say that the ring, minus the diamonds, weighs exactly 1/2 Troy ounce, about 15 grams. You would have .1875 OzT in gold, at today's spot gold price, that's $250. The other .3225 ozT in silver is worth roughly $9.
A dealer would probably offer you 70% of that total.
This is just an illustration of how it works. I don't know what your ring weighs or if the diamonds have any value. They could.
