Frequently Asked Questions...
Can you use bird seed as substrate?
Currently I'm using aspen shavings for my gopher snake, but I'm getting two more very soon. Aspen shavings are rather expensive and I have large tanks to fill. It's $20 for the bag I get and that can just give a thin layer in two tanks or a full cover in one.
I saw someone mention somewhere online that birdseed makes a great substrate and is digested harmlessly so it won't cause impaction like aspen shavings would. I can't remember what herp they were talking about but I think it was some lizard, I don't know if snakes can actually digest seeds...
So maybe something with very small grains such as millet to simulate sand? Pic here http://img.search.com/thumb/4/43/Pearl_millet_after_combine_harvesting.jpg/400px-Pearl_millet_after_combine_harvesting.jpg A large bag of birdseed at Walmart comes at a great price.
What do you think? Will this avoid compaction if they were to accidentally eat it? Or is that just lizards...
Have you heard of this before?
THANKS!
Answer:
I have never heard of bird seed for snake bedding. I would ( even though it is pricey, stick to aspen) I mean you could use newspaper, but if it is pleasing of the eye that you want then newspaper won't really work. Honestly, I would think about getting two more snakes if you really think that the price of bedding is to much. Not trying to sound rude or anything but if you can barely provide to fill one tank, how are you going to fill two more? Try looking at different pet stores, I was paying alot at one time. But I go to this small little pet store near my house now and they sell 16 quarts of aspen for $4.00. I know you may think the bird seed is cheaper but still you really don't know how it may affect your snake in the long run. Like sand the seed may irritate the scales on your snake. Gophers natural habitat is not all that sandy, they have more of a wooded, mulchy terrain. I would try looking at other bedding ( no cedar/pine).
Good Luck
