Olympus PEN E-PL2 Digital Camera Review
The new Olympus E-PL2 by Olympus may not be an all new E-P series camera with new advancements, but let me just say that I like to call it an “improvement” to the E-PL1. The E-PL2 looks nicer and is more sleek than the box like E-PL1. It also looks more like a camera and less like a toy.
Olympus PEN E-PL2 Review
Olympus EPL2 still offering a 12.3-megapixel Live MOS, micro 4/3 image sensor, the E-PL2 offers an updated body design with a large, more ergonomic hand grip, new Accessory Port 2 (AP2), undated power on/off switch, an added control wheel around the 4-way controller, new Art filters (including filter stacking), face detection with iDetect, expanded ISO coverage up to ISO 6400, broader shutter speed range up to 1/4000s, Live Guide II (still and video), a larger 3.0-inch LCD screen, cable release port, SDXC compatibility, an updated battery pack (can still use previous packs), and an all new M.Zuiko 14-42mm II lens. The most noticeable change to the Olympus E-PL2 though is not in the body at all, but in the new version of the 14-42mm kit lens. The lens is physically smaller and lighter, making the 742g combination of lens and camera one of the lightest compact system cameras currently on the market.
The Olympus E-PL2 is virtually identical to its predecessor in terms of its design, so a lot of the comments that we made in our review of the E-PL1 will be repeated here. The Olympus E-PL2 takes advantage of the mirror-less nature of the Micro Four Thirds standard to offer a smaller and lighter solution that more traditional DSLR cameras, targeting those users who want to trade up from a compact but who are scared away by the size and complexity of a DSLR. the looks and the compact nature, along with the solid build quality, should mean that the E-PL2 appeals as an alternative to a high-end compact as a back-up camera, or as a step-up model for those interested in getting more control. There is no doubting, of course, that some will pick the E-PL2 just because it looks good.
