Unforgettable Shopping Experience at the German Christmas Market in Edinburgh
One of the most appealing attractions of Edinburgh’s Christmas is undoubtedly the German Christmas Markets which bustle on the Mound Precinct throughout December.
Situated next to the city centre’s historic Scott Monument, and handily close to good quality Edinburgh apartments, the German Christmas Markets offer more than just great shopping.
The experience is a real feast of the senses, with magical sounds, mouth-watering aromas and a visual extravaganza of toys, gifts and novelties which seem to have jumped from the pages of a fairy tale.
The German Christmas Markets are officially opened by Edinburgh’s Lord Provost at the end of November, as part of the launch of the city’s Edinburgh Christmas event.
This official launch is marked by the turning on of the Christmas lights and celebrated with fireworks, and is an event in itself.
The markets form a key part of Edinburgh’s ‘Winter Wonderland’, at the east end of Princes Street, which are characterised by ice skating, fairground attractions and the iconic Ferris wheel which lights up the sky.
Browsing the German Christmas markets, you’ll discover a kaleidoscope of colour on painted wooden toys and ornaments, quaint pottery and hand blown glass.
You’ll see smurfs homes and mechanical models, alpine scenes and kitschy candle holders.
When the Scottish winter air starts to bite, you’ll find stalls selling knitted winter accessories such as socks, hats, scarves and gloves for all the family. If your hands are going blue, you’ll be glad of some new gloves, or if you’re still stuck for Christmas gift ideas, get Dad socks again- but this time they’ll be hand knitted, novelty ones.
Last but not least, there is food and drink on offer ideal for gifts and also hot treats to fill hungry shoppers.
The wealth of chocolate boxes and candy coloured sweets are reminiscent of childhood films, and are certain to make young and old eyes light up with delight.
For an immediate sweet fix, you are spoiled for choice with pancakes dripped in syrup and waffles with chocolate sauce, dumplings or Christmas bread.
For a savoury snack, choose from a German style hot dog of a Scottish venison burger.
Naturally, food can be washed down with that festive tipple, spicy mulled wine. Quality beers or delicious hot chocolate drinks are also popular.
Edinburgh accommodation at this time of year is popular, so book in advance. The good news is, there are excellent serviced apartments in Edinburgh close to the city centre, so if you are laden down with gift shopping, you don’t have too far to go.
